Noise problem from road traffic has been a public interest in Vietnam, especially in big commercial cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. The country has therefore emerged to be in urgent need of a practical noise policy from a reliable data source. To attend this grand purpose, two social surveys on community response to road traffic noise and noise measurements were conducted first in Hanoi, and then in Ho Chi Minh city. In September 2005, the socio-acoustic survey was conducted at eight sites in Hanoi (n=1,503) with two types of housing - row houses and apartments. Noise exposure characterized by frequent horn sound was from 69 to 83 dB (L_(den)). In August 2007, applying the same method, another socio-acoustic survey was carried out at eight sites in Ho Chi Minh city (n=1,471) also with both row house and apartment respondents. Noise exposure ranged from 75 to 83 dB (L_(den)). Dose-response relationships were obtained for both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh data. Dose-response curves were drawn onto Miedema and Vos' curve. Listening and sleep disturbance obtained were not as serious as expected though with high noise exposure in both cities. Nevertheless, a small effect of window direction was found for sleep disturbance in Ho Chi Minh city. The effects of moderators on annoyance were also discussed.
