Propagation of sound over large distances in an industrial environment. Analysis of three years of monitoring data

Corus Steel IJmuiden, a large steel manufacturer in the Netherlands, has installed a noise monitoring system in order to diminish the uncertainties in the calculated noise levels in the surrounding urban areas. The system has now been in operation for three years and has generated a large amount of accurate measuring data. Typical distances from sources to receiver are in the range 500-2500 m. By relating the results of the measurements to meteorological data, an interesting dependency comes forward. Individual measurements at a certain wind speed can be converted to the reference value using the dependency 2*ln(v_(wind)).
