Five commonly held premises considered questionable assumptions in the microscopictheory of superconductivity are discussed as possible reasons why the search appearsto be stalled for a theoretical framework, admittedly ambitious, capable of predict-ing materials with critical temperatures T_chigher than the 1993 record of 164K inHgTlBaCaCuO (under pressure). We focus the dilemma as a whole in terms of ageneralized Bose-Einstein condensation (GBEC) interpretation that includes and fur-ther extends BCS theory, as well as substantially enhancing its predicted T_cswithintheelectron-phonon mechanism producing pairing. The new GBEC model is an extensionof the Friedberg-T.D. Lee 1989 boson-fermion BEC theory of high-T_csuperconductors inthat it includes hole pairs as well as electron pairs.
