摘要

The current paper deals with aspects related to the tsunami characteristics for the three global oceans: Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. Each of these oceans has different tsunami characteristics and, for this reason, the numerical models required for the tsunami warning systems must be different. The differences stem from the fact that tsunami wave amplitudes at the coastline, runup and inundation are highly influenced by the boundary conditions. Using the concept of the method of characteristics, it is shown that the hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic approaches are respectively valid for the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
