The Informational Spectrum Method (ISM) allows investigation of the periodicity of structural motifs with defined physicochemical characteristics determining biological properties of protein and DNA sequences. According to this concept, protein sequence is encoded into numerical sequence by representing every amino acid with a parameter, the electron-ion interaction potential (EIIP), which describes the average energy states of valence electrons in amino acids. By discrete Fourier transformation, this numerical sequence can be presented in the form of the informational spectrum (IS), representing the series of frequencies and their amplitudes.
