In operating AOD (Argon Oxygen Decarburisation) converters for refining of high chromium stainless steel, an accurate knowledge about actual status and progress of decarburisation, nitrogen content and melt temperature is the key factor for an improved oxygen and inert gas control. Within an ECSC project, such an on-line process observation system has been developed by BFI and implemented at the AOD plant of TKL-NR in Bochum [1]. Its improvement and extension regarding the control of oxygen and inert gas input are presented in this paper.
