Depolarization Loss in Ceramic Crystal Lasers

A correction is applied to our previously published results of depolarization loss in single crystal slabs. It was found that the shape of the cut angle dependence of the depolarization loss is the same while the magnitude is less. Using the corrected approach, models were made of the depolarization loss in ceramic crystal slabs. A dependence of the depolarization loss on the grain size was found such that for small grain ceramic crystals (e.g., grain size centered at or below 8.5 μm) the depolarization loss can be less than that of a single crystal.
