Investment in water delivery systems for drip irrigation in the plot may count for up to 70 % of the total investment. The energy needed for operating the irrigated plot is affected by the materials used, the design characteristics of the plot, and its layout . The aim of the research was to find practical design parameters for optimizing purposes. A total of 20 design parameters such as type and characteristics of the emitters, pipe size, number and shape of subunits, layout, water pressure and others were considered. Their effect on installation costs and energy consumption was established through a large number of tests. The shape and size of the individual plot affects the installation and operation costs. Non-compensating emitters are recommended if topographical conditions permit them. Optimal pipe size was determined for non-compensating and compensating emitters. Shape, surface and number of subunits have an influence on the whole cost and energy consumption for irrigation . The optimal standard discharge and distance between emitters was determined, as well as the most favorable emitter discharge exponent for minimizing costs. Optimal pressure conditions for compensating and non-compensating emitters were found. The results of the research may be a useful design tool.
