KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN AFRICA

Knowledge Management (KM) is interdisciplinary. It is a process of knowledge creation, distribution and application, which can be applied to almost all the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This paper will discuss how the major facets of KM can contribute to the attainment of the United Nations' 7th MDG on "environmental sustainability". Environmental sustainability refers to the environmental actions of what we do or should be doing in order to maintain a sustainable environment. The focus of this paper is on environmental sustainability in relation to global warming. Environmental sustainability and global warming has become a serious global issue and concern for everyone, which requires efforts from all sectors of society including information professionals. This paper will explore how knowledge management can be applied in reducing the effect of global warming thus, contributing towards a sustainable environment. With a brief discussion of KM facets, the paper discusses causes, effects, solutions and challenges related to global warming with specific reference to Africa. The conclusion suggests a way forward for librarians and information professionals; how they can use KM for environmental sustainability in Africa.
