The evolution of 10Gb/s optical data comnnmications during the last decade is presented. Applications, technologies, standards, form factors and market growth are analysed. Challenges remaining at 10 Gb/s are reviewed. The transition from 10 to 40 and 100 Gb/s has already begun. The associated technological and market challenges will be discussed.
