Halogenated molecules are frequently encountered both in drug design and among the many naturally occurring pharmaceutically active compounds, and they can serve as precursors in numerous important reactions in organic synthesis. The desirable biological as well as chemical properties of halogenated molecules have spurred a renewed effort in the synthetic community to develop methodologies for selective introduction of halogens.
