Epigenetics, the alteration of cellular phenotype without altering the genotype, play a key role in carcinogenesis and tumour progression. One of the most studied epigenetic phenomena is histone tail modifications including histone acetylation by histone acetyltransferases (HATs), deacetylation by histone deacetylases (HDACs) and methylation by histone lysine methyltransferases (HMTs). HATs and HDACs are responsible for the specific chromatin acetylation levels which are related to transcription. The influence of HATs in these events suggests that other mechanism, as cell-cycle progression or apoptosis, or also be influenced by HAT-activity.
