Surface roughness measurements using three-dimensional laser imaging

One of the main parameters in the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is the condition of discontinuities. Surface roughness is a sub-parameter and commonly quantified by the Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC). JRC is estimated by manually measuring, with a ruler, the maximum asperity amplitude normal to a straight edge reference length, or with a mechanical profilometer.
