A benchmarking effort was carried out to evaluate emissions associated with the automated application of die lubrication in a 1400 ton die casting machine producing aluminum die castings. The work was carried out by NADCA as the Phase I effort of a DOE -NICE3 sponsored project. The overall objective of the project is to use "cutting edge" die lubrication formulations and lubrication application technology in order to reduce emissions, reduce scrap and improve productivity. The machine was enclosed and hooded around the die casting section in such a way that the emissions, associated with the cooling/die lubrication spray were fully contained. Three one-hour tests were conducted. During the test period, approximately 50 gallons of die lubricant were sprayed, with approximately 90 percent becoming air emissions and 10 percent collecting in the sump. All emissions were passed through a collection-filter system with emission measurements being taken on both sides of this system. Unfortunately, the removal effectiveness of the air cleaner could not be assessed because of a leak of room air into the filter unit. This leak did not affect the quantification of emissions from the die casting machine.
