Shrinkage defects of Al-Bronze sand castings for a large propeller were predicted by the numerical analysis using prediction parameters. Experimental casting was done to validate the prediction parameter of retained melt modulus used in this numerical analysis. The numerical results corresponded very well to the experimental results. Retained melt modulus was applied to investigate the effects of the casting variables on the shrinkage defects of the large propeller. It can be concluded that the numerical analysis using retained melt modulus successfully predicts the shrinkage defects of Al-Bronze sand castings.
