1 UGA-independent mis-incorporation of Sec happens extensively throughout the proteome in E. coli, in place of Cys encoded by both UGU and UGC codons; Replaced cysteines tend to be structurally unimportant in the protein. 2 Mis-incorporated proteins do not "replace" the normal Cys-proteins, despite the huge Se/S ratio in the culture medium. 3 Mis-incorporation of Sec may have an inhibitory effect on selC-dependent pathway.
