A novel method for very fast and sensitive detection, identification and quantitation of edible vegetable oil adulteration by ambient ionization-MS/MS employing a direct analysis in real time (DART) ion source and a quadrupole-time of flight (QTOF) mass spectrometer is described. Both positive- and negative- ion mode scanning were used in combination with the accurate mass functionality for improved information accuracy. The method is demonstrated for the analysis of a variety of commercially available edible oils and their counterfeits in seconds. Several markers uniquely present in various oil products were detected and identified by their accurate masses and with their CID fragmentation spectra. These diagnostic markers detection and quantitation, as well as principle component analysis (PCA) models were established, and samples from various origins were screened and recognized using the Chemometric models.
