The position and number of C=Cs of unsaturated lipids significantly affect their biophysical properties. With its high sensitivity, specificity and soft ionization nature, ESI-MS has now enabled the shotgun lipidomics without chromatographic separation, which accelerates the study of metabolic pathways and networks of lipids in biological systems. Previously, we have developed a novel method to locate C=C bonds in unsaturated lipids using Paterno-Buchi (PB) reaction with tandem MS analysis. In this study, we investigated a series of structurally diverse carbonyl compounds to study PB reactions under irradiations at different wavelengths, to improve reaction selectivity and yield, and provide flexibility in implementation of PB reactions for the lipid structural analysis.
