HILIC HPLC-MS/MS was adequate for the detection of major plasma phospholipid species in systems biology studies of lower airway diseases. LPE 22:6, LPE 20:4, PE 16:0/22:6, and SM 16:0 were good plasma lipid markers to distinguish asthma patients from normal subjects, and to distinguish asthma from COPD state. Several poly-unsaturated fatty acyl-containing PEs were upregulated in the plasma of COPD patients. These PEs also served as the plasma phospholipid markers for COPD patients. The 9-plasma lipid panel can effectively differentiate among asthma patients, COPD patients, and normal subjects. This same lipid panel could also differentiate patients among different obstructive lower airway diseases.
