-An LCMS method was developed for identification of surfactants used in personal care products. -Analysis of Cocoamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine resulted in identification of different chain lengths ranging C8-C18. -Sodium Cocoamphopropionate had varying carbon chain lengths of C10-C18, with one species containing a double bond. -Cocamidopropyl Betaine contained different carbon chain lengths of C7-C20, some compounds contained up to two double bonds. -A baby shampoo and kids shampoo were analyzed with the surfactant method: Cocoamidopropyl Betaine was identified, as well as PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate and PEG Sorbitan (C10 and C12). -C18:2 and C18:1 peaks for Cocoamidopropyl Betaine in the baby shampoo were almost absent, this may be due to the nature of natural products, or different manufacterers. -PEG Sorbitan Monolaurate may have been synthesized with lauric acid that was not pure, since similar peaks were detected correlating to a carbon chain length of 10.
