This work demonstrates that the Er:YAG laser is an excellent candidate for replacing more expensive Nd:YAG OPO lasers in ambient ionization methodologies that require 2940 nm light, including LAESI and IR-MALDESI. The direct 2940 nm wavelength and "fire on demand" capabilities of the Er:YAG laser promote simpler instrument design and tunability for the output energy, fluence, and spot size of the LAESI-MS analysis. The smaller size and weight of the Er:YAG laser will enable LAESI-MS instrument designs that have a smaller footprint, are more universal in vendor compatibility, and provide a reduced manufacturing cost.
