Because of it simplicity and low cost, paper spray ionization was a very interesting choice to perform fingerprinting analysis of weight-loss herbal medicine. PSI-MS proved to be an efficient technique to monitor the quality and authenticity of herbal medicine products commonly sold on Brazilian market. After the analysis by PSI(+)-MS, three out of fifteen samples had some compounds that were not listed on their packaged label, such as caffeine, glucose, and saccharose. One of the samples was tampered with sibutramine, which is strongly controlled by Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency. These results demonstrates the importance of monitoring slimming herbal medicines since they can cause several problems to those who are consuming medicines containing compounds beyond the ones specified on the packing, specially the adulterants.
