In simple deprotonation, G(β-O-4)G(β-β)G was most responsive in negative ion mode, however, G(4-O-α)G(β-O-4)G responded poorly because of in-source fragmentation. It's likely when deprotonated, the phenolic group at α-position is a better leaving group compared to the OH in a β-O-4 linkage, as a result the labile α,β-diaryl ether linkage undergoes in source fragmentation during ionization unlike the β-β and β-5 cyclic structures under the same conditions.
