Laser ablation electrospray ionization (LAESI) mass spectrometry (MS) couples a focused mid-IR laser beam into a water-rich sample to eject neutrals that are subsequently intercepted and ionized by an electrospray. Space limitations imposed by these two plumes limit the minimum working distance of focusing lenses that can be used for LAESI-MS practiced in reflection geometry (rg).
