The MALDI images presented here demonstrate the feasibility of using ESD to produce micropatterned analyte surfaces. Surfaces have been created consisting of sequential and simultaneous application of peptides, as well as the application of a sodium salt. By selecting analytes of particular properties, such as peptides with a range of basicities or sodium affinities, particular aspects of the MALDI IMS process have been investigated. Additionally, conventional ESD has been used for matrix application in MALDI IMS to successfully image micropatterned analyte surfaces. Selection of the correct spraying parameters is crucial for a successful image when ESD is used to apply the matrix.
