A more complete representation of the differences in soil composition is realized when solvents of differing polarities are used for extraction. This work demonstrated that solvent selection has dramatic effect on the classes of compounds extracted and detected. Limitations of using a single solvent to distinguish soil types based on ESI-FTICR-MS spectral data were demonstrated.
