Profiling and structural characterization of inositol acylsugars in trichomes of Solanum quitoense

Acylsugars detected in Solanum quitoense are different than any previously reported in the Solanaceae family Six acylsugar structures were determined using a combination of UHPLC-ESI-CID-TOF/MS and NMR spectroscopy (Fig. 5). Using only LC-MS techniques, most acylsugars in S. quitoense trichomes resemble sucrose and glucose derivatives. These results show a surprising array of tri- and tetra-substituted acylinositols, in the form of monosaccharides or as glucosyl, acetylglucosaminyl, and pentosyl disaccharides. This result demonstrates the important marriage between mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy for structural characterization of unknown specialized metabolites, which inexorably influences the prospects for their gene discovery.
