CAM is one of three metabolic pathways found in photosynthetic tissues for the assimilation of atmospheric CO_2. In contrast to C_3 and C_4 plants, CAM plants exhibit an "inverse rhythm" of stomatal opening at night and closing at day (Figure 1, shown to right). At night, CO_2 is taken up and fixed with aproduct of carbohydrate breakdown to form an organic acid, and decarboxylation of this organic acid at sunrise releases CO_2 Which is assimilated through the C3 pathway as storage carbohydrate is regenerated.
