APPI is able to ionized a diverse variety of complexes larger than 1 kDa for synthetic targets of high interest in research fields such as supramoleulcar chemistry, organic dyes, etc. APPI response of small analytes was correlated with functional group presence and rationalized in terms of effect of electron donating/withdrawing substituents on the functional group in question.
