Accurate and reliable measurements of the amount of CFTR in the apical plasma membrane of polarized CF airway epithelial cells would facilitate the evaluation of new compounds designed to correct defective trafficking of mutant CFTR. However, at the present time there are no efficient, rapid and robust bioanalytical methods to detect plasma membrane CFTR. Recent advances in mass spectrometry instrumentation and methodology offer an opportunity to develop a mass-spectrometry-based assay to detect the amount of mutant CFTR in the apical plasma membrane of CF cells.
