Performance Evaluation of three Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry Techniques for Broad Spectrum Drug Testing in the Clinical Laboratory

The LC-QTRAP~R-MS/MS detected the largest # of drugs that could be verified despite a dilute and shoot sample prep. The testing environment differed for this instrument which may have affected the outcome. The LC-LIT-MS/MS appeared to be more sensitive since it detected the largest # of drugs not identified by the other methods, however, 14.7percent could not be confirmed due to the unavailability of targeted methods. LC-MS systems out performed the traditional LC-UV and GC-MS techniques, however: 1) REMEDi detected drug metabolites better, which the LC-MS methods will need to be optimized to do. 2) GC detected drugs that each LC-MS system missed (11percent-35percent). Further analysis of this is in progress.
