Illicit Drugs From Wastewaters To Tap Water?: A UPLC-MS/MS Study

In recent years, the occurrence of human-use compounds in aquatic environments has been recognized as an important issue in environmental chemistry. Recently, illicit drugs have been described as a new unexpected group of water contaminants with potent psychoactive properties. Studies published to date have demonstrated that illicit drugs can be found in influents from municipal sewage treatment plants from USA, Italy, Germany, UK and Spain. Some of these studies have also revealed that most of these drugs are not efficiently removed through wastewater treatment and moreover can survive natural attenuation processes in surface waters which can be used for drinking water production. The incidence of these compounds in raw water and their elimination along the drinking water treatment as well as the formation of disinfection-by-products must be considered as an issue in relation to the quality of water supplies.
