The mammalian renal medulla has been described as a hostile environment in which cells are exposed to stresses including extremes of salt concentration and osmotic pressure. In this work mouse kidney cell cultures were adapted to different osmotic pressures. While these treatments were well within the physiological ranges normally experienced in vivo, they nevertheless provided an extreme modification of the physicochemical milieu of these cells. The present work documents changes in the proteome of these cells in response to osmotic challenges using difference gel electrophoresis (DIGE) and mass spectrometry.
