The microwave-drill technology employs concentrated microwave energy in order to drill thermally in hard non-metallic materials such as concrete, ceramics, glass, silicon, and rocks. Besides drilling, the microwave drill enables insertion of pins and nails, melting, cutting, and joining. This paper reviews recent studies conducted on the microwave-drill technology at Tel Aviv University. The paper introduces prototypes and examples of drilling results, and new applications such as drilling of bones (for orthopedic applications) and of plastics, and local processing of silicon (e.g. heating, joining, and bonding).
