GUDN as an Ingredient in Insensitive War Heads and Boosters

GUDN, Guanylurea dinitramide, synonymous with FOX 12, has been demonstrated to be an extremely insensitive energetic molecule. It does not react in fall hammer and friction tests. So far it has been used as a gas generation component in compositions for air bags due to its excellent burning characteristics. It has been demonstrated by FOI that it also has a potential as an high explosive. If boosted with a large charge and at large diameters it can detonate. The detonation velocity is around 8200 m/s for a charge at theoretical maximum density. This velocity combined with a density of 1.67 g/cm~3 suggests an explosive performance above TNT.
