COAST ECONOMIC LOCALIZATION LINK (CELL) - RESPONDING AT THE LOCAL LEVEL TO PEAK OIL AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate Change and the decline of a cheap and abundant petroleum resource make it necessary for our society to transition to the use of renewable energy and refocus our activities to the local and regional level. Coast Economic Localization Link (CELL) was formed in March of 2005 to educate the public about the pending pressures that Peak Oil will bring and to organize the community to create a safety net. A major component in the creation of this safety net is the transition to renewable energy sources in all aspects of community life. The proposed paper will chronicle the evolution of this grass roots group from the Mendocino Coast in Northern California and suggest that strategies used there can be used in other communities to inform and empower the citizenry to make lifestyle choices that will increase their use of renewable energy and decrease their ecological footprint.
