As-produced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) form bundles due to van der waals interactions between them. These interactions are why nanotubes are extremely difficult to disperse and separate. Van der Waals interactions are also responsible for stabilizing a collapsed nanotube. This class of adhesion related problems has been tackled almost exclusively by molecular simulations. In this work, we show that continuum adhesion mechanics can offer new insights into the adhesion and collapse of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs).
