Use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors such as RADARSAT in mapping rice area is highly suitable for tropical countries like the Philippines. With its unique capability to "see" through thick cloud cover and erratic weather conditions, RADARSAT can provide data when a cloudless optical image is impossible to acquire. Three time series of RADARSAT-1 fine beam mode data for different rice grows stages of year 2005, was acquired for Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija area of Philippines to map rainfed rice areas. Also, TERRA-ASTER VNIR image acquired in 2002 and some other secondary data were used to support the information extraction in the study area. An intensive field survey was done to collect ground truth data on the rice fields in this area corresponding to satellite pass. It was possible to map the rice paddy area with accuracy of 90%.
