BIOMASS ESTIMATION AT MIYAGI PREFECTURE IN NORTHEAST JAPAN USING RS AND GIS

At the industrial side, biomass fuel that is made mainly from plant does not increase CO_2 in the atmosphere different from oil products and Japanese energy resources are limited. Therefore, biomass utilization for energy is recommended. Considering the industrial and agricultural side, biomass is important material for plant nutrition and soil conditioner as compost. It is important to understand locations where exist biomass, quality and quantity of biomass for effective utilization. A target place is Miyagi Prefecture in the northeast Japan because we are project members of Integrated Compost Study at Faculty of Agriculture in Tohoku University. First, we classified the place into some land cover categories to determine each area as follows. Paddy field, Grassland, Broadleaf forest, Coniferous forest, Broadleaf and Coniferous forest, Urban zone and Snow, Water body. Second, biomass estimation of each category is made by formula (1). Biomass = Biomass by area unit on carbon weight x the area of each categories... (1) Biomass by area unit is determined using existent reports and field surveys. As a result, the area of Miyagi Prefecture was calculated with 709,966 hector and total biomass was estimated 29,318,098 ton on carbon weight. We used satellite data derived from Landsat and existent GIS. The existent GIS is provided by Geographical Survey Institute in Japan. Software that we used is ArcGIS, ERDAS IMAGINE.
