Off-design CFD simulations: the state of the art and a roadmap towards full industrial maturity

A research programme was proposed in 2013 by three UK aerospace companies in order to establish the state of art of the Computational Fluid Dynamics applied to off-design conditions in a real design context. The 3-year project "Flow Simulation at Off-design Conditions" sponsored by Innovate UK arose from the collaboration. Design and off-design simulations were performed throughout the project to assess the state of art and the level of confidence the CFD provides in the industrial practice. The consortium concluded that CFD simulations at off-design conditions are not routinely used for a number of technological shortcomings that need to be addressed. The project proposes to face these challenges by strategic developments. Successful completion of these will result in a commonplace application of CFD to off-design conditions as part of the normal day to day design process. A roadmap to realising this vision has been developed and is presented in the paper.
