Structures of various function can be affected by human induced vibration in many ways. Depending on the type of the structure, the load, the structural response, and the serviceability criteria to be met vary and may not be clearly defined. There are several guidance documents covering the evaluation of the footfall aspect of human induced vibration in buildings and structures, but this does not cover all types of buildings and structures, and in particular, does not cover gyms and sports facilities. This paper outlines Arup's holistic approach to assess gyms and sports facilities in mixed-use structures for human induced vibration. It typically incorporates on-site testing, finite element modeling, performance criteria selection, and design and validation of potential structural mitigation solutions. The methodology is presented throughout several case-studies highlighting the value of each element of the process.
