BLUE DIAMONDS COAL COMPANY'S LEATHERWOOD COAL PREPARATION PLANT UNDERGOES MAJOR CIRCUIT MODIFICATIONS

The acquisition of Blue Diamond Coal Company in 1998 by James River Coal Company resulted in a series of plant modifications being undertaken to increase plant capacity as well as process efficiency. The most recent upgrade completed the replacement of the former Deister Table circuit with a heavy media cyclone circuit. In addition, a previously unused screen technology to the US coal industry was employed to dramatically reduce high ash slimes from the ultra fine circuit resulting in enhanced plant product quality control.This paper will discuss the engineering and construction phases of the project as well as present information on the flow sheet design. Information will also be presented to detail the before and after results obtained from plant circuit testing that justified the capital expenditures for these plant modifications.
