The Hickory Street Bridge, crossing over the Allegheny River in Warren, PA., represents a unique context sensitive approach for bridge design by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Opened for traffic in September of 2005, this bridge received acclaim for its visual impact on the city of Warren.The Hickory Street Bridge refutes the misconception that bridge aesthetics must involve a high cost investment as well as preclude typical structures that can be easily rated. This bridge is an example of the possibilities of making a design truly sensitive to the context of its surroundings. With its unique features, this bridge was able to take the most common adjacent concrete box beam components and provide a spectacular focal point for the central business district as well as enhance the Historic District if the city of Warren.
