Our development strategy in field of energy during the Eleventh Five-year plan is aiming at reducing the energy consumption per GDP production by 20 percent compared to that of the end of Tenth Five-year plan. It is of great importance to research and develop energy saving vehicles in field of transportation. The flywheel battery, as a kind of mechanical-electric energy converting and storage device, has seen a rapid progress in recent years in view of technology with the stimulation of aerospace and navigation and the rapid progress of power electronics, material and magnetic floating technology, especially the financial supports from the governments. It has been used in field of electric vehicle as power energy supplier or braking energy recovery and has shown great potential for further application that is due to advantageous characteristics of it. The state-of-art of flywheel battery technology and its application in field of flywheel electric vehicle, fuel cell vehicle and hybrid vehicle will be summarized in the paper in detail basing on a certain number of valuable materials and it can used for reference in EV circle.
