We studied the effect of partial liquid ventilation (PLV) in 12 asphyctic preterm lambs randomly assigned to: basal group (sacrificed immediately after the hypoxic-ischemic event), conventional ventilated group and partial liquid ventilated group (both sacrificed 3 hours after hypoxic-ischemic event). Brain injury was induced by partial occlusion of umbilical blood flow during 60 minutes. In the lung, PLV showed significant differences in comparison to CMV in all the morphometrical parameters analyzed. In relation to brain injury, CMV showed a higher apoptotic cell count when compared to PLV. These results suggest that PLV improves the alveolar recruitment without adverse effects on brain lesion.
