The use of PK/PD models to optimize the use of antibacterial and analgesic drugs in the NICU will be presented, For this purpose case reports will be used.Gentamicin has a major role in antimicrobial therapy in gram-negative neonatal infections caused by Pseudomonas-, Enter obacter-, Klebsiella species, and E, Coli. Penicillins and aminoglycosides (AMGs) are the most commonly used antimicrobial agents in the NICU(l). The antibacterial activity of AMGs can be best defined as concentration dependent killing (peak/MIC and AUC/MIC are the validated surrogate markers used for optimizing dosing regimens of AMGs). In addition AMGs exert a postantibiotic effect (PAE) but there has been recent debates on the amount of PAE for every individual AMG (2).
