Elevator systems would be in principal a good example for a perpetuum mobile. While lifting loads and persons electrical energy is converted into potential energy and reconverted later. Due to increasing energy costs and environmental impact, it is of high interest to know the energy consumption of elevators already before the installation. On the one hand to compare different components or drive technologies; on the other hand to show up the saving potential in case of a modernization. However, the energy consumption varies significantly, as elevators are usually a unique copy. Thus a simulation which calculates the energy consumption with a high accuracy is introduced and validated at real elevators. Afterwards the influence of different drive technologies and components is analysed.
