Today, the standard shaft seal for most applications is the elastomeric radial lip seal [1]. However, high temperatures, high speeds, dry run and aggressive fluids can harm and destroy elastomeric seals [2]. Seals made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can cope with the problems those demanding applications pose. Its outstanding material properties enable PTFE to function at temperatures up to 200°C, in combination with almost every fluid and in dry running condition. In contrast to elastomeric radial lip seals, PTFE lip seals do not automatically pump back fluid. Thus, leakage, the leak rate, must be faced [1].
