SEALING CHARACTERISTICS OF MULTIPLE-LIP SEALS FITTED TO RECIPROCATING SHAFTS

This report describes tests on two types of fabric - reinforced rubber seals, namely "S.E.A." and "V" rings, used both singly and in sets. Friction and leakage were measured under a wide range of shaft speeds and oil pressures. Leakage decreased considerably with the number of rings used in the set, but friction did not rise in proportion to the length of the seal. V-rings gave rise to less friction and allowed less leakage than "S E A" rings.
