Within the SFB 442, Tasks B5 and B6 focus on the examination of environmentally friendly tribological systems in machining (B5) and metal forming (B6). B5 and B6 each contain a sub-task that deals with the investigation of the behaviour of austenitic steels as a workpiece material within the respective processes. In comparison to ferritic/pearlitic steels, austenitic steels are more difficult to process. These difficulties result from their high ductility, their tendency to form adhesions, their severe strain hardening and their low thermal conductivity. The effect of these properties on the processing behaviour of austenitic steels is discussed in the first part of this contribution. The second part deals with the application of innovative PVD coating systems in metal forming and metal cutting of austenitic steels. The coatings are examined in combination with biodegradable lubricants which, to a large extent, are free of additives. The experimental results presented here originate from pin on disc, deep drawing, fine blanking, turning, drilling and milling tests of the austenitic steels X5CrNi18-10 and X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2.
